Martyn Lloyd Jones Spiritual Depression

Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones elaborates on spiritual depression based on sin and the grace of God. Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones states that spiritual depression occurs when a Christian ignores the scripture. Correspondingly, the scripture helps Christians dwell in the goodness and the mercies of God to avoid sin. The scripture helps Christians acknowledge the union of Christ in their lives to attain victory over sin. On the same note, the book of Romans 6:14 elaborates the reward of God’s grace when we overcome sin. Paul writes in Roman 6:14, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” As such, for us to overcome spiritual depression, we need to accept our union with Christ Jesus to experience the victory we have in Him, for sin no longer has dominion over us.

What Is Spiritual Depression?

Spiritual depression is the state of losing spiritual stamina and joy. A person suffering from spiritual depression develops a constant feeling of weakness in connecting to their spirituality. Christians experience spiritual depression in different forms, such as:

  • A lack of desire in reading the scripture

These aspects reflect a sign of spiritual depression in a Christian’s life. Spiritual depression stems from various elements of your life. We experience spiritual depression when we begin to disconnect from the goodness of God. You may recognize the disconnection, but most often, you fail to maneuver through your disconnection from God. In addition, spiritual depression makes you doubt your prayers and meditation. Ultimately, you develop thoughts that God is not answering your prayers. Hence, you become frustrated in your faith and understanding of God’s presence in your life. Spiritual depression also means the inability to find joy in various religious activities such as worshipping and your regular religious routine such as going to church. Spiritual depression creates tension in your personal life. In addition, spiritual depression develops guilt and doubt when you share your frustrations with family members or friends. Spiritual depression makes you believe people do not understand what you are going through.
