The Secret of How We Can Rely on Our Intuition

Intuition is also called the “sixth feeling”, and following its typical definition, it is a human ability to forecast future events. In practice, it sounds like this feeling allows us to know the right answer to all questions, being at the same time an inner instinct without logical reasoning. Let’s talk about this feeling in detail and discuss its influence on our life. Should we believe in it?

Intuition Definition and History of its Discovery

By experts’ points of view, intuition is directly related to sensory memory, which helps at the required time to discover quickly in mind those elements of lived and stored experience, which can be the most “adequate” ones to the current situation. By the way, the word “intuition” has Latin roots. It comes to our language from “intueri,” meaning “stare.” It could be understood like looking closely at the inner world, at the secrets of the human’s subconscious, at somebody’s experience. The right decision, the comprehension of the true meaning of the event, comes suddenly and is supported by fantastic confidence. This phenomenon has excited the minds of scientists. In the 19th century, the French philosopher Henri Bergson even formed a whole direction called intuitionism, engaged in the study of intuition: its nature, meaning, manifestations.

Following psychologists, intuition is considered one of the possible leading functions of the personality, determining a person’s attitude to his or her being and the surrounding world. By the followers of this direction, intuition is one of the ways, which may help the person to make some vital decisions.

To this day, science cannot explain what intuition is. By it, intuition meaning is similar to talking about love: everyone knows that love exists, but no one has been able to explain what it is. It looks like it is a state that can only be felt. It is the ability to feel the right choice, and it is present in every person. This ability is embedded from birth. However, unfortunately, some people just forget to use it. After all, life decisions are usually made, taking into account five senses. Intuition is not a physical touch, not a sound, not a smell, not a visual image. It is something intangible, but at the same time, it is quite real.

Features of Human Intuition and the Ways to Develop Your Intuition

The level of intuition depends on the general development of the personality. However, it is always individualized and dynamic. Following the specialists’ points of view, informative features (both logical and sensory) change their significance under the influence of emotional state and features of experience. Conscious and unconscious processes involved in intuition can interact, change places, support each other, or even counteract.

Before trusting intuition, the person must learn to feel it. The experts are sure that to develop the intuition, the first of all modern people need not get stuck for a long time in small, everyday issues and problems. The second point is to find time every day to elevate consciousness. The third and the last condition is to cut off unnecessary thoughts, emotions, and twists, as well as learn to “not think” in crucial moments.

In practice, following the intuition meaning this feeling begins to work when logical thinking stops. The essential condition is to be creative in any action and not to be inactive. If you want to succeed, you have to show effort and initiative. When any question arises, do your best to find the answer yourself. There are many exercises and pieces of training that help to improve intuition. However, if you want to see the results and the desired effects soon, you need to systematically deal with them. These simple recommendations are going to help you to define intuition over a short time.

Men’s and Women’s Intuition: What is the Difference?

The presence of the exceptional women’s intuition is confirmed by neurophysiology. Nobel laureates Robert Sperry and Michael Gazzinig have found that each side of the brain in humans is responsible for different functions in studies involving neuro patients with “disconnected” hemispheres after surgery. The left side of the brain is more responsible for intellectual functions: logic, structure, analytical and mathematical abilities. The right one deals with feelings, emotions, images, fantasies, facial perception, creativity, and intuition. However, there are alternative studies that show that the difference in the sides is not so critical and absolute. Usually, women are more active in using the right side (or both) than men, who are more likely to use the left. Besides, ladies have a more developed limbic system of the brain, responsible for emotions, sensory memory, feelings to others.

Recently the English psychologist Richard Wiseman has discovered a fantastic thing. The research was based on experiments with portraits (participants in the experiment – men and women had to determine the sincerity of the smile in the photos) concluded that female intuition is comparable to males. However, in real life, women still use their instincts more often, while men usually prefer logic and moral intuition parameters.

The Role of the Intuition for People

Intuition is the most critical tool in decision making, but it is not always worth blindly following it. Sometimes doubts, fears, and misconceptions are woven into intuition. For example, it is challenging to distinguish the impulse of fear from the anticipation of possible losses. In order not to make a mistake, you must, first of all, calm down, relax and neutralize the negative inner background. Intuition can also be an invaluable service in difficult life situations when you need to choose the right option from several.

At first glance, it is difficult to say what is right and what is not. Only a trained subconscious can point in the right direction without any predictions or assumptions. The person should not think carefully, and for a lot of time, he or she has to know that the chosen option will be correct. When intuition starts to work, there is such a strange but delightful feeling that life responds to your desires. It resonates, responds to you, there is a feeling of reciprocity as if you have an affair with life.

Much of what ancient or contemporary philosophy, art, and scientific discovery carry is intuition. To create a work of art, to reach any aim or invention, to create something new, the person needs not only some knowledge and a pure theory. Modern men and women need to feel and convey the essence of the idea that they are trying to understand or convey through any form. Intuition is how the soul and heart communicate with the consciousness: it goes beyond logic and common sense.
